LIVING SYSTEMS

Houston's ecological side deserves to be seen.

Houston is one of the most ecologically rich cities in America.

We sit on a coastal prairie ecosystem shaped by bayous, wetlands, migration corridors, native grasslands, and one of the longest growing seasons in the country. Hundreds of bird species move through Houston every year. Buffalo Bayou is part of a major migratory flyway. The city is home to one of the largest urban bat colonies in North America.

Most Houstonians never hear that story.

Living Systems exists to change that.

A new way to experience Houston.

Living Systems is building a public platform that helps residents and visitors discover Houston's ecological side through events, experiences, organizations, and outdoor spaces already active across the city.

Make Houston's natural systems easier to find, experience, and be part of.

Houston already has the ecosystem. What's missing is a unified way to experience it.

Why this matters.

Houston's future will depend in part on how well we work with the natural systems around us.

As the city faces increasing heat, flooding, habitat loss, and rapid development, there is growing interest in restoring native landscapes that support biodiversity, improve drainage, cool urban environments, and reconnect people to the ecological identity of the Gulf Coast.

The proof already exists across Houston. Native landscapes across the city are bringing pollinators, birds, frogs, and biodiversity back into spaces that had gone silent.

Living Systems believes meaningful change begins with visibility. When people can see and experience the living systems around them, they begin to value them differently.

Built for Houston.

Living Systems was founded by Pete Den, a product leader with a background across software, operations, and applied AI. The initiative's founding advisor is award-winning Houston artist Cindee Travis Klement, whose restoration projects and ecological field work have helped shape public conversations around native landscapes and regenerative thinking across the city.

Together, Living Systems is building the infrastructure around a simple but powerful idea:

Houston's natural systems are not separate from the city's identity. They are part of the same living network that has always shaped Houston itself.
